Q: A merchant noticed customers were being charged twice—once for the product, then again for a separate fee. Why did this happen, and how was it fixed by adjusting Sticky Labels settings?

A merchant using the Advanced Fees app on Clover POS ran into an unexpected issue: their customers were seeing two separate charges—one for the item and then a second, smaller transaction for the fee a few seconds later. This disrupted the checkout experience, especially for card-swiping customers who were surprised by the second prompt.

After looking into it further, the merchant mentioned they also used Sticky Labels, an app designed to print product labels directly from Clover POS. They noticed that right after ringing up an item, the system prompted them with a message: “Do you want to print this?” This small pause between item entry and payment was enough to interrupt the Advanced Fees app’s workflow.

To test this, the merchant changed a setting inside the Sticky Labels app. By going to Sticky Labels > Set Printing Preference, they switched the printer mode from Automatic to Manual. This stopped the automatic print prompt and required them to click the printer icon manually if they wanted to print a label.

This small change resolved the Advanced Fees issue. Now, the total (including fees) is charged in a single transaction as expected—no second swipe, no remaining balance.

So what happened?

The automatic label printing caused a screen interruption that interfered with the timing of how Advanced Fees adds fees to the sale. When Clover gets distracted by other tasks—like printing prompts—it can “finalize” a sale too early, before the fee is applied. That’s why the system treated the fee as a new charge. Switching to manual printing avoided this issue by giving the operator more control over when and how printing occurs.

Recommendation:

If you're using both Advanced Fees and Sticky Labels and noticing issues with fee processing, go to Sticky Labels > Set Printing Preference and choose Manual printing mode. This gives you more control and prevents transaction interruptions that may cause multiple charges.
