Clover POS Tax Breakdown for Weight Scale Barcodes

Clover POS Tax Breakdown for Weight Scale Barcodes

Product Described: Variable Price Barcode Parser

A merchant using Clover POS with the Register Plan and the Variable Price Barcode Parser app had a scenario involving a BBQ pork item sold by weight. Their process prints a barcode label with a final price (e.g., $10.00), and they want that when the barcode is scanned at the register, the Clover system shows a subtotal (e.g., $9.50) and tax (e.g., $0.50) instead of a flat $10 with no breakdown.

While Clover does not allow a barcode label to directly split into subtotal and tax based on label total, there is a workaround that achieves the same outcome.

Workaround:

  • Set the item price on the scale to $9.50. This ensures the printed sticky label reads $9.50.
  • In Clover, mark this item as taxable and assign a tax rate that would yield the desired tax amount (e.g., $0.50 for 5.26% tax).
  • Result: When the barcode is scanned into Clover, the system will read $9.50 as the item price and automatically calculate $0.50 tax, making the total $10.00—matching the label the customer sees.

This method maintains transparency on the receipt while complying with tax regulations and customer expectations.

If the merchant’s goal is to show an included tax within the total label price (i.e., $10 already includes tax), this cannot be natively reversed by Clover at scan time. Clover doesn’t support parsing backwards from a gross price to split tax on the fly from a barcode scan.
