Weighing Heavy Materials with Clover POS: Understanding Scale Limitations

Question:
I have a merchant that sells sand and stone and uses heavy-duty scales. We were brainstorming ways to incorporate Clover into the process and thought of leveraging your solutions. Is there a way to integrate heavy-duty weighing scales with Clover using your apps?

Answer:
When integrating scales with Clover POS, there are two primary options, each designed for specific use cases:

  1. CAS SW-RS Scale (Direct Clover Connection - 20LB Capacity)

    • This is the only scale that physically connects to Clover POS, allowing merchants to place an item on the scale and automatically capture the weight at checkout.
    • Limitation: This scale has a 20LB weight limit, making it unsuitable for heavy-duty materials like sand and stone.
  2. Label Printing Scales (Standalone Solution - Higher Capacity)

    • Commonly used in butcher shops and delis, these scales weigh the item, print a label with the total weight and price, and the barcode is scanned at checkout to enter the weight-based price automatically.
    • Flexibility: Any label printing scale can be used, including CAS models that offer higher capacity.
    • CAS Equipment Option: We offer a CAS label printing scale with a remote platter that supports weights up to 300LB, but this scale is designed for food service applications. Using it for materials like sand and gravel may cause premature wear and tear.

Recommendation

Unfortunately, Clover POS does not support direct integration with heavy-duty industrial scales. The best alternative is to use a label printing scale to weigh the material and print a barcode, which can then be scanned into Clover POS for checkout. However, this method may not be ideal for non-food materials, as these scales are primarily designed for grocery and deli applications.

If your merchant requires a fully integrated heavy-duty weighing solution, Clover may not be the best fit for their use case. They may need a more specialized industrial POS system with native scale integration.
