A merchant recently asked us a common yet critical question:
"I want to offer my own store discounts on cigarettes — not manufacturer-funded ones like Altria offers, but my own promotions. Can I use Discount Scheduler for that?"

The short answer is no — not if you're using Tobacco Scan Data.

Why can’t Discount Scheduler be used?

Discount Scheduler allows merchants to automate discounts on a schedule. However, this scheduling logic can interfere with the way discounts are recorded for scan data reporting, potentially invalidating your eligibility for rebates or even disqualifying your reports entirely. That’s because scan data programs require strict control over how and when discounts are applied, and automating them through a scheduler may bypass those requirements.

What can you use instead?

There are two safe and effective options that do not interfere with scan data:

  1. Mix or Match or Combo Discounts:
    This app is ideal for creating custom store discounts based on item combinations or quantities. It works well with cigarettes and does not affect scan data compliance. You can set up "Buy 2, get $1 off" or similar promotions.

  2. Digital Coupons:
    If you want to create in-store or merchant-financed discounts — for example, based on loyalty programs or exclusive offers — digital coupons are a great option. These are manually or digitally issued and redeemed, so they do not conflict with how the system handles manufacturer-funded discounts.

Bottom Line

If your goal is to run your own store promos on tobacco while staying compliant with Altria or other manufacturer scan data programs, avoid using Discount Scheduler. Instead, opt for Mix or Match app or digital coupons — both are safe, effective, and fully compatible with scan data requirements.
