Product Described: Clover POS
Question:
A tobacco shop wanted to create a very detailed tax breakdown for cigarette sales: first applying a 3% cigarette tax to the base price, then applying a 7% city tax on top of that already-taxed amount. They were wondering if Clover or any Clover apps could support such a sequence. They needed it because regulatory requirements demanded exact separation and stacking of different tax types.
Answer:
Unfortunately, Clover POS does not support cascading or sequential taxes where one tax is calculated on top of another tax. In Clover, taxes are always applied based on the original item total.
For example, if you sell a $10.00 pack of cigarettes:
3% cigarette tax is applied to $10.00
7% city tax is also applied to $10.00
The order in which taxes are triggered doesn't change this — Clover does not allow the first tax to modify the base amount for the second tax. Both taxes independently apply to the original $10.00 price.
Similarly, if a discount is applied to the item, Clover still calculates taxes based on the original price unless specifically configured otherwise, and even then, tax behavior is limited.
There is currently no app solution that can modify Clover’s built-in tax calculation model to allow for cascading taxes.
Summary:
Clover applies all taxes directly to the original item price.
Tax application sequence does not change the total.
Clover POS does not currently allow tax-on-tax breakdowns.
If you require more complex tax management beyond what Clover allows, it might be necessary to look into external reporting solutions or customized workarounds outside of Clover’s POS system.
